Councillors backing battle on Willenhall post office

The battle to save Willenhall's main post office has won the support of the full council.

It is one of 70 Crown Post Office branches, or those run directly by the Post Office, earmarked to be franchised and located in a shop. Campaigners are trying to keep the main branch in the town.

Last night council members backed a notice of motion from Labour councillors Carl Creaney, Gareth Illmann-Walker, Sean Coughlan and Diane Coughlan.

It states: "The council wishes to place on record its opposition to the process of privatisation taking place within the Royal Mail and the threat to the 'six day, one price goes anywhere' delivery. We believe that these proposals will lead to higher prices and a worse service for Walsall residents."

Councillor Sean Coughlan said: "I am pleased that we have got the full support of the council. I hope that the Crown Post Office service will listen to what Walsall councillors are saying."

Residents at a public meeting held earlier this year said no other shops in the area could cope with the volume of customers that the popular post office currently deals with. A final decision on the proposals for Willenhall is not expected until the next financial year.
