Fans of Wolves and Shrewsbury have released a joint statement calling for calm ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime derby.
The game at the Greenhouse Meadow sold out last week and will be the sides’ first league meeting for 28 years.
West Mercia Police announced yesterday that 200 extra police will be on duty for the 1pm kick-off with a crowd of 9,000 expected at the game.
Officers from West Mercia and Warwickshire forces will be drafted in, with expert ‘spotters’ from West Midlands Police being used to identify known troublemakers.
Representatives from both clubs today issued a message on behalf of supporters to try and prevent derby-day tension.
Steve Parkes, Wolves supporter and Fans Parliament member, said: “We wanted to put this statement out with the Shrews fans to say that all decent supporters want to see a game played in a great spirit – on and off the pitch.”
