Businesses and charity shops are calling for action over the problem, at the back of stores in Union Street and Stafford Street.

Workers say they are only able to park on a small section of the private car park due to the illegally dumped waste.

Shop manager Lisa Flaherty, who runs Cancer Research in Union Street, said: "We've been finding dirty needles which have been used for drug taking and there are gangs of grown men hanging round and apparently taking drugs."

"Fly-tippers dumped 13 tyres right in the middle. There's a fridge there now and a mature lilac tree which has been ripped apart by vandals. Last weekend we had youths jumping from roof to roof."
