The steel structure is now in place and the pool tanks have been cast and tested for the new West Bromwich Leisure Centre, which will include a 25-metre pool, learner pool, sauna and steam room and four-court sports hall.

A 100-station fitness suite, two dance studios/activity rooms, indoor children's adventure play centre and café are also planned. The centre, on the corner of Barton Street and Moor Street, is set to open in summer 2014.

The borough's leisure boss visited the site on Friday and was given a sneak preview of the centre. Councillor Paul Moore, the council's cabinet member for health and wellbeing, was joined by West Bromwich East MP Tom Watson where they met representatives from DC Leisure – the company the council has appointed to design, build and run the centre – and Pellikaan Construction.

Councillor Moore said: "Tom and I were delighted to be taking a sneak preview of the region's most exciting new leisure pool and seeing how work is progressing.
