Walsall children's services watchdog set up

A watchdog group to inspect children's services in Walsall has been set up following a damning Ofsted report.

The group, made up of councillors, will visit parts of the children's services department to find out how the system works.

It comes after a damning Ofsted report into the way the local authority protects and safeguards vulnerable children in its care was released last summer.

The safeguarding working group has now been set up to get a better insight and to seek assurances on the improvement process. A report will then submitted to a meeting of the Children's and Young People's scrutiny panel later this spring.

Councillor Barbara Cassidy, chair of the scrutiny panel, told a meeting last night: "It will help provide an overview for councillors of how young people get the support they need."
