The blue and green streak of light was also seen by people living in Shropshire. People across the area reported seeing the object flashing across the sky at around 9pm yesterday.

Astronomers said the meteor, which had a long, blue and green tail, had burned up as it entered the atmosphere over northern Europe.

Twitter user Matt (@Mattmbr) contacted us with his account of the strange sight. He said: "We were heading home to Wolverhampton after a bike ride. It was an amazing sight. Crossed the whole sky, white light with blue green tail. Stunned into silence."
