New players in the travel market are finally beginning to tap into holiday makers discontent with the package holiday industry

Christmas and New years has finally come to pass, and as we enter the colder months of the year our thoughts naturally turn to warmer climates.

January and February are the busiest months for the bookings of summer holidays, and one only needs to glance outside to understand why so many millions of us pour over brochures and websites seeking that silver lining at the edge of a very dark cloud. 2013 could prove to be a very important year for the travel industry with new players hoping to finally bomb the dying tradition of the package holiday completely out of the water.

Traditional travel agents are getting increasingly nervous as more and more of us choose to book our travel services through independent websites. Customers have discovered that huge savings can be made using both comparison or alternative travel websites, and this has already seen the traditional competitors lose their stranglehold on the lucrative British market.

Using comparison websites such as Skyscanner is a great way to find the cheapest flight options but perhaps the biggest threat to the old-guard comes from alternative forms of accommodation. Companies such as Wimdu.co.uk, after much success in the city-break market, are now increasingly recognized as the most popular alternative to crowded resort hotels. Offering you the chance to live with or rent from a local, these new companies are hoping to springboard off the initial success achieved in Summer 2012. And with so many of the popular holiday destinations covered it is easy to see why they are so bullish over their chances of becoming a major player in what has become a stale and saturated market.
