Care home scheme in Wolverhampton is backed despite petition

Controversial £12million plans to build a care home, GP surgery and supermarket at a key Black Country gateway have been earmarked for approval as it emerged the development would create dozens of new jobs.

Almost 300 people have signed a petition against the scheme for the 48-bed care home with 18 associated flats, a food store, doctor's practice and another unit, which could be a pharmacy, on land off New Road in Portobello.

Heantun Housing Association has entered into an agreement with Wolverhampton City Council to bring forward proposals for the land on the Willenhall-Wolverhampton border. A planning application is set to go before members of Wolverhampton City Council's planning committee on January 8. Officers recommend approval.

Documents have revealed the scheme would create 60 jobs if it gets the go-ahead and that Walsall Council has objected, saying retail development would "not be appropriate" on the site.

The papers also state that the store would open between 8am and 8pm from Monday to Saturday with deliveries on those days between 8am and 6pm.

On Sundays and bank holidays, the store would be open between 10am and 4pm with deliveries allowed between the same hours.

A petition containing 274 signatures against the plans has been lodged with the council. Some residents would prefer more affordable housing.

Detailed plans for the care home and the close care flats have been submitted along with outline plans for the store and GP surgery. If it gets the go-ahead, work could start next spring.
