Tragedy struck shortly after the victim, who has not been officially identified, left a nightclub in the early hours.

He was with a friend when he fell to the ground as they walked across Queen Square at around 1am yesterday.

The man's friend called an ambulance but paramedics were unable to save him. A post mortem examination was unable to identify the cause of death. Toxicology tests are now under way.

The man had left Club Babylon in nearby North Street minutes before he collapsed and police are appealing for any information from club-goers that might help to unravel the mystery.

The death is being treated as unexplained.
