Four council-run car parks and the Mander Centre parking facilities will be made free during late-night shopping events due to take place this month.

Drivers will be able to use Fold Street, Market Street, School Street and Peel Street from 4pm on November 21, the date the Christmas lights will be switched on in the city.

Free parking will also be available from 4pm on December 5, between December 10 and 15, December 17 and 22 and Christmas Eve for any late-night shoppers.

At the Mander Centre free parking will be available on all the same dates and times as the council car parks as well as after 4pm on November 28 and December 8 but it will not be in operation on Christmas Eve.

The centre will be open until 7pm on December 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 22. From December 17 until 21 it will open until 9pm, Christmas Eve it will open until 5.30pm and on Boxing Day the stores will be open between 9am and 5.30pm.

Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council's cabinet member for regeneration and prosperity, said: "We are thrilled to be able to give an extra helping hand for visitors to our city centre this Christmas.

"It can be an expensive time of year for families so offering free parking at some of our car parks will certainly help ease the burden a little as well as boosting local trade. We hope that people will take advantage of this incentive."

Kim Gilmore, manager of the city centre company WV1, added: "Both the council and major retailers have been very supportive for Christmas parking for the last three years."
