The water feature in Queen Square picked up the Marsh Fountain of the Year award for 2012.

The fountain was unveiled in July 2009 after being marred by completion delays. Representatives from the city council and the designers of the fountain, Ustigsate, attended an awards ceremony this week, when they were presented with the accolade by The Duke of Gloucester.

The award pays tribute to the best new or newly-restored fountain or water feature.

Councillor Peter Bilson, cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: "We are delighted to receive such a prestigious award for our water feature.

"Since it opened, visitors to the city centre have enjoyed the various displays – particularly in the warm weather.

"It is a unique fountain and one that has greatly enhanced the look of Queen Square and we are proud to have received such recognition."

The fountain has enough computer generated dancing water displays to last for 11 weeks and can be customised for special events such as Christmas and New Year.

Golden lights were included to honour Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.
