Man arrested on suspicion of murder after two found dead in Walsall flats

A murder investigation was launched today after two people were found dead at block of flats in Walsall.

The bodies of a 69-year-old woman and a man in his 30s were found at the block of flats on the Yew Tree Estate.

The woman was found inside a flat in Holly Court, Acacia Avenue, while the man was discovered in the grounds behind the block.

Today a 43-year-old man was arrested and was being questioned by detectives on suspicion of murder.

Senior investigating officer Det Insp Warren Hines said it is believed that all three people were known to one another.

"We are not seeking anybody else at this stage in connection with the deaths," he said.

Police were called at around 1.30am today after a resident of the block of flats came across the male victim, who has yet to be identified, dead on the ground.

Officers then went inside the block and found the elderly woman inside a flat with fatal injuries.

DI Hines said door-to-door inquiries were carried out and a man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder shortly afterwards.

Inquiries as to the nature of the relationship between the two victims and the man arrested were ongoing today.

A blue forensics tent was set up at the rear of the eight-storey building, close to parking bays and garages for the flats.

Forensics teams remained at the scene throughout the day, combing the flats and surrounding grounds for evidence.

The entire block of flats was cordoned off, with a police car parked outside the entrance doors and another outside the perimeter of the building.
