Thousands of people helped break a Guinness World Record when they joined in an Indian Bhangra dance spectacular in the open streets.

At least 2,300 people danced the four rehearsed routines of Bhangra in traditional costume in Potters Lane, Wednesbury to smash the record for the most Bhangra dancers performing at one time.

The record was 2,100 people.

The record breaking attempt yesterday was called Dance for the Oneness event and was organised by the Sant Nirankari Mission, a religious movement with branches in Birmingham.

It forms part of the summer-long International Festival of Oneness held by the mission which started on the date of the Queen's Jubilee.

It followed a new world record for combined bhangra and giddha dancing being set at Victoria Park, Smethwick, in June.

Co-ordinator Ricky Bhatia, 40, of Great Barr, said: "We are so happy to have broken the world record.

"The event was part of a summer-long festival which has seen so many people come together from all over the world.

"Breaking a record leaves a lasting memory for everyone – it was especially great because it happened in the West Midlands."

The event, which started at 6.30pm and lasted for 13 minutes, was free for people to join and was also part of Sandwell Arts Festival. Everyone who took part received a certificate and a medal.
