A unique art project capturing the hopes and wishes of people in Wolverhampton has been set up in the city.

A chalkboard bearing the statement "Before I die . . . " has been installed, and people are being invited to write down their thoughts.

Armed with chalk, paint and stencils, two university students are encouraging passers-by to write down what is important to them.

Deb Shelley, aged 41 and Jo Rooney, 34, first year fine-art students at the University of Wolverhampton, have set up the chalkboard along the length of Victoria Street. The board is in front of derelict shops.

The students were inspired by New Orleans artist, Candi Chang, who turned the side of an abandoned house in her neighbourhood into a giant chalkboard.

The Wolverhampton wall was set up by the women on the street where the Olympic Torch is to come down later this month. It will be taken down at the end of the week.

Mrs Shelley said it was an "amazing feeling" to be able to bring something so creative to the city. She said: "I am so proud with what we have achieved. The wall is already packed with messages.

"Messages have been heartfelt. A young boy wrote 'I want to make my mum proud.'

There have been some strange ones too, including 'Reveal my true identity' whilst another expresses: 'I want to be Keith Lemon'."

Other message include 'I want to be immortal'; 'I want to love and be loved'; 'I want to see my children succeed'; 'I want to make my mum proud'; 'I want to play bingo'; 'I want to see no more litter'; 'I want to move back to Birmingham'.
