Thousands of rush-hour drivers were held up today following a crash between a lorry and car on the M6.

It happened on the northbound carriageway between junction nine at Wednesbury and 10 at Walsall at about 6.50am.

On the M6, the hard shoulder, which is normally open to ease traffic, and the left lane of the motorway were closed so debris from the crash could be recovered.

At its height, traffic queues stretched back to junction seven, at Great Barr.

It is understood an off-duty paramedic, pulled over to treat a passenger in the car. The injuries were not thought to be serious.

In Cannock, a teenager motorcyclist was flown to hospital after falling off his bike on Voyager Drive yesterday. The 17-year-old rider suffered pelvic and chest injuries and was airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire

Police closed a section of the road after the accident at 6pm. For a short time, the A460 Eastern Way was also closed in both directions between Lichfield Road and Orbital Island.

Both returned to normal by 8.30pm.
