Ex-Wolverhampton mayoress with artistic gift dies

A former mayoress of Wolverhampton with a passion for arts and crafts has died aged 90. Therese Birch passed away peacefully in hospital on February 13.

Mrs Birch accompanied husband Dennis during his year as mayor of the county borough in 1973 and 1974. She met many dignitaries and in 1976 was with her husband as he was awarded the CBE.

The housewife and mother took to her duties well despite having no previous experience in local politics.

Her interest in arts and crafts led to Mrs Birch creating numerous dolls, lampshades and other works in the couple’s home in Tern Close, near Sedgley.

Former Labour councillor Mr Birch, 87, said: “One particular example was hung at the West Midlands Police headquarters in Birmingham.

“It was the coats of arms of all the different local authorities fashioned in pewter.”

Mrs Birch joined the Sedgley branch of the Townswomen’s Guild and was an enthusiastic and prominent member of the group.

“She certainly found her niche, for her days with the guild proved to be some of the happiest of her life”, Mr Birch said.

Mrs Birch leaves a daughter Imelda, 60, and granddaughter Abigail, 28.

The funeral is due to take place next Monday, February 27, at 3.30pm.

It will be held at Gospel End Crematorium followed by light refreshments at Sedgley Conservative Club.
