Street drug dealer is jailed for two years

A drug dealer who peddled crack cocaine and heroin from his Fiat car was today beginning a two-year custodial sentence.

Saiful Ahmad sold the drugs on the streets of Walsall as he drove around the town in a Fiat Punto.

When officers caught up with him, they discovered crack cocaine and heroin already wrapped and ready to be sold, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard. Ahmad, aged 20, was caught when he was stopped in his car by police at about 7pm on August 17.

During a search of the vehicle, they discovered 10 wraps of heroin and four wraps of cocaine in the footwell of the car, as well as £97 in cash, prosecutor Miss Alka Brigue told the court yesterday.

Ahmad was arrested and officers then visited his home in Alexandra Road, Walsall. They found a further £364 in the glove compartment of a black BMW belonging to the defendant, Miss Brigue said. Three mobile phones he owned were also recovered by officers.

During yesterday’s hearing, the court heard father-of-one Ahmad claimed he was selling the drugs on behalf of a man he knew only as ‘AJ’ and that he was paid just £30 a day to sell them.

Mr Marcus Kraehling-Smit, for Ahmad, said his client was “aware of the seriousness” of his crime and that he had a two-year-old son to support. “He is a young man who has no previous convictions for offences of this nature. He realises he was foolish and naive,” he added.

Ahmad had earlier admitted possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

Judge Michael Challinor sentenced  Ahmad to two years’ custody and also ordered the confiscation of the drugs, cash and Fiat Punto.

He told him: “You were deliberately selling this off to anyone who wanted it.

“The harm of course is immense. Class A drugs are at the root cause of a huge amount of criminal activity in this country and those who pedal these drugs, if convicted, have to be dealt with severely.”

The court heard each wrap contained 0.745g of cocaine or 0.547g of heroin.

Judge Challinor added: “I accept that your involvement in this was as a street dealer.”
