First glimpse of future for former estate land

These images give the first glimpse of what a 700-home redevelopment of large swathes of Walsall will look like if given the go-ahead by planning chiefs.

Proposals for the multi-million pound scheme are due to be submitted to Walsall Council this week, just days after they went on show to the public.

These are the first artist’s impressions of how the area would look.

The scheme will also see the creation of six acres of green belt land in a “land swap”, which will see the former Goscote estate turned into open space.

Existing green belt land around Shakespeare Crescent will then be turned over for housing.

Nearly 100 people attended a consultation event at Blakenall Village Centre in Thames Road last Thursday when the plans were finally unveiled after years of planning.

Regeneration boss for Walsall Council Adrian Andrew said today: “Over many decades, different administrations have used local and national money to invest in this area and every programme has failed long term.

“Putting local people in the driving seat and working with the major landowner and landlord, Walsall Housing Group, we are collectively taking a very different approach.

“What this project does is give people real change, it’s about changing aspirations and having a positive impact on the everyday lives of people living in this community.”

Alison Hayward, regeneration manager for Walsall Housing Group, said: “Over the past six years we have been working with the community to develop plans that will raise aspirations and build a sense of community in the area.

“The new proposals will pave the way for a private sector developer to invest and transform the area into a successful sustainable community.”

The majority of homes to be built will be available for sale. Vacant sites at Well Place and Barracks Lane, which already have full planning permission for 105 new homes, will also form part of the overall development.
