New grit to tackle county’s streets
Monday 16th January 2012, 11:00AM GMT.
A powerful new grit solution which continues to tackle ice and snow even when temperatures plummet as low as -10 degrees is being trialled in Staffordshire.
The salt is mixed with a highly potent additive which means 30 per cent less is needed to treat the county’s roads compared to using normal grit.
Staffordshire County Council claim this will save Staffordshire taxpayers around £150,000 over an average winter.
Their decision to use the new grit comes as the first snow of the year is expected this week.
The pilot will run from early February from Lichfield and Gailey depots covering Lichfield, Tamworth, Burton, Cannock, Rugeley and South Staffordshire.
County Councillor Mike Maryon said: “This revolutionary grit solution could not only save £150,000 per year but would also improve road safety which is absolutely priceless.”
It is expected to stay dry over the next few days, with temperatures reaching no higher than 6C (43F).
Snow is expected Friday, although forecasters do not believe it will be heavy.
