The Public in West Bromwich attracts 230,000 visitors
Monday 26th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
The number of visitors to the controversial arts centre The Public has almost doubled in the past 12 months, it emerged today.
The West Bromwich gallery has welcomed more than 230,000 people through its doors since the start of January, compared with 126,000 last year.
The figure represents an 83 per cent increase on the previous year.
The news has been welcomed by staff at the £72 million gallery, which opened less than two-and-a-half years ago.
The project has received criticism after it ran £49m over budget and critics branded it a waste of money.
Managing director Linda Saunders said today the increase was down to factors including the gallery’s choice of exhibitions, word of mouth, partnerships with schools and increasing use by community groups.
The gallery’s events programme, which includes comedy, music and theatre performances, was also highlighted as playing a key part.
Mrs Saunders said: “No-one is going to say it didn’t cost a lot of money but The Public is being widely used by the local community.”

If you look very carefully at the figures you will see that they are very misleading.
The number of functions held by the local council and bodies associated to the council bump up the figures by an unreal amount.
What does need to be stated is the number of people that have been through the doors not attending prearranged forums and not just to use the toilets.
This is then the figure that should justify the building.
Are the council prepared to publish those figures?

“Used by the local community”!? The propaganda never ceases with this white elephant does it? Would have been used by thousands more if it were a new cinema / pool / leisure complex. Blot on MY landscape this is!!!

The people counter just records people walking through as I know one of the guys who installed it.
If a person walks in and out 10 times, that counts as 10 visitors.
So even if someone walks through to go to town square shopping centre (can’t recall the name of the centre now) they will be counted
Since the counter is new, they must have been simply using a different system last year.
