It was once the place where bobbies could relax with a pint after a long day on the beat, but the last remaining police social club in Staffordshire has now closed.

Wombourne Police Club has been wound up ahead of the station’s proposed closure and sell-off as part of the force’s £39 million of savings. Police bosses said today members of the public could continue to meet there but no alcohol would be served from the bar in the future.

Supt Juliet Prince from Staffordshire Police said: “We’re carrying out a thorough and detailed review of all of our buildings. Wombourne Pol-ice Station is being considered as part of this review.

“The social club at Wombourne was the last of its kind in the county and, while it was well-used, we need to ensure that our buildings are used in a manner that is consistent with the values of the force and for appropriate policing purposes.”

The social club was wound down on Friday. Former members have now been told they can use the Wombourne Club in Mill Lane for  fundraisers where alcohol would be served.

One member, who did not wish to be named, said: “After 40 years, Wombourne Police Club has had to close.

“The decision was made almost immediately and the club closed on Friday in an emotional farewell.

“A letter was sent saying members were still allowed to go up to the club but the bar will remain closed. Did they think we were all heavy drinkers instead of just having a social drink and a chat?

“The club hosted many fundraising events helping local schemes such as Russells Hall Hospital, St Benedict Biscop CofE Primary School and Midland Air Ambulance. It is the end of the era.”

Police bosses have said officers will still be based in the village in the future.

Anxious residents presented a 1,256-signature petition to Parliament pleading for police to retain a “proper” base in the village after the current one closes.
