‘Devoted mother’ tribute by victim’s family
Tuesday 20th December 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
The family of a woman killed when she was knocked from her bicycle on an accident blackspot in South Staffordshire today described her as a “devoted” mother.
Sarah Louise Smith died following the accident along Blackhalve Lane in Essington.
Ahead of her funeral tomorrow, her 26-year-old daughter Hayley said the mother-of-three would be “greatly missed for her caring nature and consideration”.
In a statement, Hayley said: “The tragedy has come as a horrendous shock to the family, who will keep her memory alive by highlighting the dangers and safety issues faced by cyclists using Blackhalve Lane. We urge other road users to take care and use the necessary safety precautions, as we would hate any other family to experience what we are going through with our loss.”
Ms Smith, who is also the mother to 14-year-old Peter and 12-year-old Daryl, was a support worker at the Pear Tree Lane care home in Wednesfield.
The 45-year-old, of Church Crescent, Essington, was killed in a crash with a Mercedes Sprinter on December 7. A 40-year-old man was arrested and bailed following the crash.
Almost 550 people have signed up to a Facebook petition demanding action along Blackhalve Lane, where the crash took place. Since the tragic death, residents in Essington have rallied round and, in a move spearheaded by Councillor David Clifft, have organised a Christmas food hamper for the family.
Hayley said: “We would like to thank villagers, Cheslyn Hay School pupils, Councillor David Clifft and other well-wishers for their kind words, support and donations.”
She added: “Mum, you will always be in our thoughts and hearts and we love and miss you terribly.” Ms Smith’s funeral will be held at St John’s Church in Essington from 10.30am tomorrow. Friends or anyone who knew Ms Smith are invited to attend. Councillor Clifft, said: “The whole of Essington is deeply shocked by this tragic accident,” he said.
