A man suffered suspected spine injuries after falling on to a raised gantry at a Dudley steel works.

The 54-year-old man was rescued from the metal platform, which was raised around 18ft off the ground, at Marcegaglia Ltd on New Road, Netherton at 4.46pm yesterday.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene and a rope system was used to bring the man down so he could be placed on a stretcher.

Members of West Midlands Ambulance Service’s hazardous area response team were called to the site as they are trained to carry out rescues from high areas.

The injured man was taken to Dudley’s Russells Hall Hospital for further treatment.

The firm declined to comment on the incident this morning.
