It smashed into a 4ft high brick wall covering a grass bank overlooking the canal.

Two men suffered minor injuries in the crash at about 4.30am yesterday, which left the front of the car badly smashed in.The 28-year-old passenger was trapped in the wreckage and had to be cut free by fire crews.

Today residents were still clearing up the debris in their front gardens.

Lee Beddall, aged 41, said: “I was asleep when in bed when I was woken up by a massive loud bang followed by sirens. At first I thought something had hit a fire engine at the crossroads with the A491 up the road.

“We’re used to hearing traffic and crashes as this is a busy road but I’ve never heard anything like this. I looked out of the window and couldn’t see anything at first but then I was shocked when I saw the car against our wall.”

A front window and the bonnet of his Land Rover were damaged by bricks sent flying from the wall during the crash.

Police spokeswoman Helen Thompson said the Mercedes was being followed by officers. The 25-year-old driver was arrested at the scene and charged with handling stolen goods, in relation to the car, dangerous driving and failing to provide a breath test.
