Lye Town FC clubhouse saved from blaze

A football clubhouse was saved from burning down by a member of staff collecting kits for the next match, firefighters said today.

A fire broke out behind plasterboard in a kitchen area being refurbished at Lye Town FC at around 8pm.

Watch commander Simon Wiggins said a burning smell was noticed by someone picking up kits last night for today’s match.

He said: “It was lucky as if they hadn’t raised the alarm the whole place could have burned down. It was being worked on and an area was smouldering and caught fire.”
