Migrants are arrested in fresh Wolverhampton raids
Tuesday 15th November 2011, 11:00AM GMT.
Seven illegal immigrants were arrested by police and border officers during a series of raids in Wolverhampton last night.
Two people were detained after they were discovered at the Copper Bowl Indian restaurant on Birmingham New Road.
It was one of three businesses raided along with two homes.
The Express & Star was invited to watch last night’s latest assault on tackling the “rife” immigration problem in parts of the city.
Police have discovered some landlords are exploiting immigrants by charging them up to £700 a month for sub-standard accommodation and threatening them with eviction if they complain.
Reports of some workers being paid just £3 an hour have also been investigated while in one case, an Indian couple was forced to live and sleep in a cupboard-sized room and clean for the landlord.
In Blakenhall, officers found three men sharing a bed while at one house in Mason Street, up to 38 illegal immigrants were thought to be living there.
