Rare mushroom delays housing scheme

Construction of a 100-home estate in Darlaston is facing delays – due to the discovery of a rare kind of mushroom.

Ecologists insist that no work can begin at the site until plans are drawn up to protect and transfer the unusual earth star fungus.

Planning permission has already been granted for 106 houses off Richards Street and Whitworth Close. But Mar City Developments has been told the fungus is “unusual and worthy of retention”.

The firm has now produced plans on how to relocate it and transfer the mushroom to safety.
