Tributes to teenager who drowned in Smethwick canal

The family of one of the teenagers who died after falling into a Black Country canal have paid tribute to her.

Sara Rylance, aged 17, was pulled from the Birmingham Canal off Whitehouse Drive in Smethwick along with her friend

Mohammed Fayz Uddin, aged 18, on Wednesday night but later died in hospital. It is believed she was trying to save her friend.

Sara’s parents and sister today issued a statement, after making an appeal for privacy.

They said: “We are very proud of Sara for being so brave in risking her life to save another. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.”
