Councils to spend £265k on lighting up Christmas

Christmas spirit is alive and well at West Midland councils as most vowed to protect the budgets for lights and decorations despite massive cost cutting.

More than £265,000 is being spent on lighting the region and putting on events to attract shoppers and give traders a boost during their busiest time of the year. Wolverhampton City Council will fund lights in the city centre, Bilston, Wednesfield, Tettenhall and Dudley Road.

The big switch-on in the city centre on November 23 will feature Grand Theatre panto stars Sam Kane and Linda Lusardi.

Sandwell is in the final year of a £300,000 five-year budget for Christmas lights.

Only Dudley Council has made a cut to its festive budget, taking £6,000 off funds from lights in Dudley, Halesowen, Stourbridge and Brierley Hill.

The festive budget was never massive to begin with, and now Dudley Council once again proves how much it despises the English, and their culture.

    Christmas lights – who cares?

Is this another “essential service” that our super-annuated warriors deliver?

    Who’s going to miss them?

Jesus would not have wanted lights at all. We all know, including the self righteous poster “Scrooge” here, that the money would be better used to help house single mothers – of which there are plenty in the Midlands. Homelessness is a blight all year round, nit just at Christmas. There will be people sleeping in less salubrious places than a crib in a stable. happy Christmas everyone!

Where is Wolverhampton council priorities lying? I could not believe my eyes when I read that 265k was being spent over the region including Wolverhampton who is funding Christmas lights for its city centre, Wednesfield, Tettenhall, Bilston and Dudley road. A decision this year has been made that children’s facilities i.e children’s playgrounds are to be closed. Surely parents would prefer to keep these facilities open instead of looking at twinkly lights for the duration of Christmas. We need to keep our children safe and off the streets and the parks help provide this as well as keeping people employed. Surely the money being spent for lights and events would possibly keep one of these facilities open for a while longer. A disgruntled parent of a council worker.
