Walsall Council workers to see cut in Christmas break
Friday 28th October 2011, 5:00PM BST.
Up to 200 Walsall Council staff are poised to have their extended Christmas Bank Holiday break axed this year, it emerged today.
Town hall bosses are cutting the festive entitlement from three days to two for some workers after insisting services should be available for taxpayers.
Staff working in facilities like the First Stop Shop which deals with inquiries including housing, benefits and bin collections are set to be lose the extra day.
But they will not lose out as this day would then be added to their holiday allocation. Final negotiations are taking place with staff but is due to come into force this December.
Workers currently have Christmas Day, Boxing Day and then a further day off. But ensuring the council is only closed on statutory days will bring Walsall in line with many other authorities across the region.

I’m fully in favour of this.Well done the bosses. They should not have any more holiday than other councils.
All the councilliors work on christmas day taking calls ( just try them – they are always available) Therefore the employees should show the same commitment

Some of these comments are so short sighted. No wonder the world is in such a mess, with comments like this! Essential services already work all year round. If the Council buildings were shut for the week, imagine how much the tax payer would save in heating and lighting the public buildings! I would like to know what the public demand is during the last week of December. I don’t imagine there’s many folk flush with cash to pay into the Council coffers after Christmas!
