Midlands drink-drivers remaining on the road

More than 120 convicted drink-drivers in the West Midlands and Staffordshire still have a licence to drive, figures revealed today.

Of 3,451 people convicted of drink-driving last year, 82 in the West Midlands and 40 in Staffordshire were not disqualified from driving, a freedom of information request from insurance company LV= showed.

Magistrates are given sentencing guidelines that say only those people who prove they face “exceptional hardship” should be allowed to keep their licences.

There were 2,354 people in the West Midlands and 1,015 people in Staffordshire who lost their licences for drink driving last year. Nationally 55,539 people were convicted but 1,480 were not disqualified. The statistics also showed that 2.6 per cent of drink-drivers re-offend within one year.

How can these people on the bench honestly beleive these people pleading hardship.
Whenthey go out drinking & then drive after where is the hardship in that, they don`t find it hard to pay for the drink and if they are driving they don`t find it hard to pay for the vehicle so where is the hardship.
I only see it as hard to buy the next pint or to pay for ther next five litre`s of fuel to get the pub, the courts should wake up and ban them what they use for booze and fuel for the vehicle they could use for bus fareand travel with the rest of the public who suffer hard ship by having to catch the bus because they can`t afford a car , and if they want a pint they walk or get a lift of a friend.

And before anyone starts carping that i don`t know what i am on about ,iwas done for drink drive in 1987 and i relied on my car for my job,but at the time i knew what the law was and therefore paid the penalty.
stop mollycoddling these people learn them a lesson i learn`t mine.

I hope the Magistrates taking their children to school don’t have the misfortune to meet one of these ‘exceptionally hard-up’ lunatics! I’d feel safer if they were off the road.

This report is legally incorrect. you can’t plead exceptional hardship for drink driving you can however argue ‘special reasons’ as to why you should not be disqualified. A lawyer.
