Women hurt in collision on Great Wyrley lane

Two elderly women were airlifted to hospital after a serious accident on a country lane in Staffordshire.

Meanwhile another driver had to be cut free from the wreckage of his car and taken to hospital after a crash in Long Lane, Great Wyrley, yesterday at 5.30pm.

The pensioners, in their 80s, were passengers in a Vauxhall car which collided with an Audi in Hixon, near Stafford, at 5pm on Saturday.

They were trapped in the wreckage along with the drivers of both vehicles for 45 minutes until cut free by firefighters. The accident happened on the A51.

One pensioner, 87, was flown to University Hospital North Staffordshire with hip, leg and back injuries.

The other, aged 84, was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, for treatment to her back.

The driver of their car, a woman in her 50s, and the Audi driver, 50, were taken to hospital.
