Around 200 elderly residents and their families braved the elements, as they took their fight to save Black Country care homes threatened with the axe to the Council House steps in Dudley.

But council leaders said they will forge ahead with plans to shut four care homes in Dudley despite desperate pleas for proposals to be scrapped last night.

Pensioners, some aged into their 90s, refused to let the autumn winds deter them as they wrapped up in blankets to protest outside the building. Many took sandwiches and snacks while clutching posters to show their dismay at the planned shake-up of adult social care services.

They created their own placards and shouted chants as councillors entered the building before the meeting.
