A driver who ploughed into a grandmother's car, leaving her with life threatening injuries has been jailed for more than three years.

Tejinder Singh Chumber was speeding along New Swan Lane in West Bromwich when he lost control of his car during a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and smashed into 53-year-old Rosemary Ward's car, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard yesterday.

Miss Rhiannon Jones, prosecuting, told the court that Mrs Ward, of Blackheath, was driving home in her Vauxhall Corsa at around 5.30pm on Saturday, February 12.

Chumber was driving in the opposite direction in his Rover 200 1.8 litre turbo car.

Miss Jones told the court that a witness estimated Chumber's car was going at around 80 miles an hour and added: "Crash investigation experts do not believe that is an exaggeration."

The court heard that Chumber, of Jonah Road, Tipton, lost control of the car when he tried to pull back on to his side of the road after seeing Mrs Ward's car ahead of him. The side of his car smashed into the front of her vehicle.

While Chumber walked away from the crash, Mrs Ward suffered life changing injuries. She had to be cut from her car and airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

She was unconscious for four weeks and has undergone 30 operations to date. She remains confined to a wheelchair, has lost mobility in her hand and is completely reliant on her family.

The court heard Chumber, aged 28, denied driving at speed in the 30mph zone but pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Judge Amjad Nawaz sentenced him to 40 months in prison and disqualified him from driving for six years.
