Wolverhampton teenage rioter facing custody
Friday 30th September 2011, 4:04PM BST.
A teenage rioter who threw a missile at police during “harrowing” scenes of violence in Wolverhampton city centre was facing custody this afternoon.
Cassius Taylor, aged 17, can be named today after magistrates agreed to lift reporting restrictions on the youngster, who was captured on CCTV during the chaos last month.
But they stopped short of allowing a photograph of him to be published in the Express & Star or publication of his address.
Wolverhampton Youth Court today heard how Taylor was among hundreds of people who rampaged through the city’s streets on August 9 and was caught on CCTV launching a missile at police officers standing just feet away from him.
He was part of a group on Lichfield Street who were seen kicking and punching out at police during some of the most violent scenes of the disorder.
Prosecuting Miss Jenny Winzar said: “He was seen in his hooded top running up and down Lichfield Street.
“He bends down and picks something up and with all his might throws it directly at police officers who are standing just six feet in front of him.”
The court was today shown the CCTV footage which Miss Winzar described as a “harrowing piece of evidence to watch.”
Taylor was taken to Wolverhampton Police station by his mother after she saw photographs of him in the Express & Star’s coverage of the violence.
She was praised for her actions by chairman of the bench Beryl Farrow.
Defending, Mrs Bally Paul, told the court Taylor had spent a month on remand.
Mrs Farrow said she was lifting reporting restrictions because “the public rightly needed to know and be satisfied that offenders have been brought to justice.”
She warned Taylor, who admitted violent disorder today, he could be locked up when he is sentenced at the same court on October 24.
He was released on bail, with an electronic tag.
