Pensioner in fatal smash on M6
Monday 26th September 2011, 11:30AM BST.
A pensioner died and three people were injured after two cars collided on the M6 in Staffordshire, closing a stretch of the motorway for around seven hours. The man was thought to have been in his 70s.
He was in a Land Rover which collided with a Volkswagen Golf 4×4 just south of the Stafford services travelling northbound between junction 14 and 15.
Both cars left the carriageway and the Land Rover ended on its side.
Three ambulances, an incident support officer and a Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford all scrambled to the scene.
The man, who was not local, was confirmed dead at the scene. A woman in her 60s in the Land Rover was taken to hospital with head and shoulder injuries. A man and woman inside the Golf were also injured.
The accident, which happened at around 1.30pm on Saturday, meant that the M6 had to be closed between the two junctions, causing seven miles of traffic queues.
