Thieves have been snatching huge hauls of supermarket trolleys in the Midlands as the value of scrap metal continues to soar, it emerged today.

The Asda store near Molineux in Wolverhampton, had almost 150 trolleys stolen in just one week last month.

Technology that stops trolleys being wheeled off supermarket car parks has failed to kerb the thefts – crooks simply carry off the trolleys.

Wolverhampton Asda customer services manager Ian Roberts today said he believed the thefts were down to the rising value of scrap metal.
