Business ambition of Red or Black millionaire Kevin Cartwright
Friday 9th September 2011, 7:00PM BST.
Red or Black millionaire Kevin Cartwright has revealed he will go back to work if doctors can treat his sick fiancee for her debilitating illness.
The former lorry driver from Cannock was forced to give up his job with parcel express firm DHL to look after partner Nicola Dawson full-time, and revealed his bosses refused three times to accept his resignation.
Last Sunday Kevin became the second winner of a £1 million jackpot in the roulette-based ITV show, Simon Cowell’s latest venture.
Now he hopes he and his partner will be able to carve out new careers and possibly start their own businesses.
Nicola, aged 38, spoke of how difficult it was to watch Kevin carry out the household chores without being able to help.
Her condition, the incurable blood disorder hyperlipidaemia, prevents her from bending and stretching, and often leaves her confined to bed. The medication and inability to exercise has also seen her weight go up by three and a half stone.
The worst attack 15 months ago left her in the intensive care unit at Stafford Hospital for a week.
She said: “The illness is like the worst case of indigestion multiplied by 100. The pain is excruciating.”
The couple hope that a revolutionary operation will improve Nicola’s mobility so they can return to work.
The pair enjoyed their jobs. Kevin was a coach and lorry driver and Nicola was a cleaner, barmaid and valet.
She would like a job in the beauty business having qualified as a nail and beauty technician at Cannock College before falling ill.
Kevin, 44, said: “We’d both like to get back into a career, maybe working for ourselves.”
The pair, who met on a coach trip when Kevin was the driver, have three children from previous relationships – Steven, 23, Nadine, 22, and Jodie, who will be 15 on September 17. The couple have warned Jodie not to expect a big celebration.
“For one thing, spending the money makes me feel physically sick,” said Nicola.
