Help wanted over mystery bricks

Mysterious carved stone bricks have been rescued from the remains of an an historic church that is in the process of being bulldozed.

They have been found during the demolition of the Grade II listed Mellish Road Church in Walsall.

They are being kept aside to use in a future development.  Four large stones around the archway of the building have been recovered displaying patterns of shields, while around 20 smaller stones are being kept with carvings of letters. Staff from PBM Contractors are fascinated.

Brian McGarry, from PBM, said: “Some of the stones have been saved to become part of a new development so people can remember what was there before.

“There are four big stones with patterns which are each about two square feet. There are also about 20 stones with letters on them around the bottom of the church. We’re not sure what they mean.”
