Swings and slides stolen in raid at playground
Tuesday 30th August 2011, 9:00PM BST.
Swings, slides and a climbing wall have been stolen by metal thieves from a children’s play area in a Halesowen nature reserve.
The play equipment was cut down by thieves who struck overnight at the toddlers play area at The Leasowes, off Mucklow Hill.
The theft was discovered by staff when they arrived at work this morning.
Two swings, two slides, a climbing wall and a chain bridge were stolen.
It is thought the offenders used a disk cutter or angle grinder to chop the equipment down from their frames before taking them away in a vehicle.
Council chiefs say they believe the equipment may have been taken to be sold on for scrap.
Metal thefts have been on the increase across the Black Country in recent months as prices and demands rise. Businesses, homes and churches have all been targeted by thieves.
Chairman of the Friends of Leasowes Park, Marianne Diller called the thefts “dreadful” news for the park and residents.
“I’m not sure how much this scrap metal would fetch in money but the equipment was so much more valuable to the community and to the park,” she said.
“I’m really sad to hear about this as the playground is much used by children and their families and is one of the main attractions for the park.”
Council chiefs said workers were yet to estimate the cost of the damage but it could cost the authority thousands of pounds.
Councillor David Stanley, cabinet member for environment and culture at Dudley Council, added: “I can’t believe that people can stoop so low.”
