The blot on Walsall’s landscape that was the Overstrand bridge building has been banished to oblivion.

The structure was finally pulled down yesterday, leaving an unobstructed view of St Matthew’s Church from the High Street.

Shoppers and passers by gathered to watch the final moments of the former restaurant and music venue as a three-week programme of works culminated in the redundant building disappearing.

About 60 tons of concrete was pulled apart while more than 500 litres of water was poured over to control the rising dust.

Bernard Bird, aged 71, of Deepmore Avenue, Birchills, watched as part of the structure came down. He said: “I’m pleased to see it go. I always thought it was an eyesore.” Shoppers Chris Clifford, 36, and his wife, Kelly, 31, of Weston Street, Caldmore,  watched the demolition.

He said: “I think it will look better because you can see the church.”  His wife  added: “It has always looked a mess.”

The site was prepared by Wates Construction and pulled down by demolition specialists Coleman & Company. All of the materials will be recycled.

Andy Hands, business unit manager for Wates Construction overseeing the work, said the area was being totally cleared today and will be accessible as a pedestrian walk-through by tomorrow.
