Wolverhampton Supt Mark Payne wrote on Twitter: "Excellent CCTV of offenders in Wolverhampton. Over 20 arrests made for various offences, more to follow in the next 24 hours."

He added at 9.20pm: "Situation is calm in Wolverhampton."

A Twitter account has been set up encouraging people to join a clean up of the city on Wednesday morning.

A West Midlands Police statement gave full details of the operation to date.

It said: "The disorder has been on a smaller scale today than was seen on Monday evening in Birmingham, and police have been working throughout the afternoon and evening to calm the situation and target the offenders in all three areas.

"Police in Birmingham have been managing groups of people causing disorder in several areas within the city centre during the afternoon and the evening.

"There have been some shops attacked, and there has also been a car set alight on Moor Street.

"Police continue to tackle two groups in the city causing some issues. One of these has been moved out of the centre, the other are fragmenting. Officers are still on the ground tackling these offenders.

"Contrary to rumours there have been no incidents at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

"Numbers of people involved are estimated to be less than on Monday evening.

"There was also some disorder in Kings Heath earlier this afternoon, with a group ending at the police station but this group dispersed. There was minor damage to one police vehicle.

"In West Bromwich there were reports of a large group of people in the town centre this afternoon, who were dispersed. There is currently another large group in the town centre being managed by officers.

"Earlier in the evening police in Wolverhampton responded to reports of a large group of people in the city centre.

"The group caused some criminal damage to shops in the city centre, but these groups have now dispersed.

"There are still pockets of disorder at St. Johns Retail Park which are being dealt with by local officers.

"National Express are also stopping bus services in the West Midlands this evening from 9.30pm.

"Police arrested 142 people on Monday evening. Several of these have been charged and detained to appear before the court tomorrow, with the majority remaining in custody pending decisions on charges.

"These are broken down into violent disorder, burglaries, criminal damage and theft from stores, with isolated incidents of robberies and theft of motor vehicles.

"Officers also executed 29 warrants during the day which resulted in seven arrests and a substantial amount of property stolen from last night being recovered.

"In total we have arrested 43 people today in connection with the disorder.

"The Casualty Reduction Bureau has also dealt with 224 calls from the public providing information about the disorder. A team of detectives are now reviewing the information provided with a view to identifying further offenders and bringing them to justice."
