Trees in park are ruined by fire
Saturday 30th July 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Thirty conifer trees in Wolverhampton’s West Park went up in flames in a suspected arson attack, just feet away from an historic glass house.
Firefighters battled to stop the flames spreading to the park’s landmark Victorian conservatory and storage shed after the 30ft trees caught fire.
Three crews of firefighters from Wolverhampton and Fallings Park stations were call out at 9.30pm yesterday.
The blaze took around three hours to get under control.
Paul Evans, watch commander at Fallings Park station, said: “The trees are completely destroyed. Wol- verhampton station did a fantastic job keeping the fire contained – it could have easily spread to the greenhouse and storage shed.”
Paul Bainbridge, crew commander at Wolverhampton Fire Station, said: “You would assume it has been started deliberately or be-cause something has been carelessly discarded.”
