Talks underway for £370m hospital
Tuesday 26th July 2011, 11:30AM BST.
Top level talks are under way in an effort to find £370million funding for a major new hospital serving patients in the Black Country.
The Department for Health is in talks with the Treasury over the Midland Metropolitan Hospital Project in Smethwick.
But the project could still be at risk as the Government has made no decision on whether it will give a guarantee to cover the costs of the project, if Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust gets into difficulty.
The super hospital, which will provide the majority of services for patients from the existing Sandwell and City Hospitals, is set to open by 2016.
Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals Trust has submitted an outline business case for the project to the Department of Health.
Under the plans, the trust will build a brand new single hospital site as part of a wider regeneration scheme.
But it will also see the number of acute beds at the NHS trust fall from around 950 to 666 beds.
If the Treasury finds the cash, the hospital could open as early as 2015 or 2016 as part of the Private Finance Initiative.

So they have down scaled other hospitals and made job cuts but now do not have the funding to stick with the project ,this is just typical of our government big idea`s by bigwig`s but not a brain cell in sight ! and ONLY we will suffer for this .

What a complete waste of money. We keep hearing the goverment mantra, via them & the media, we have got to save money & cuts costs. Not going ahead with this white elephant must be one of the goverments easier decisions.

With the size of Birmingham and Sandwell it would be more sensible to have satellite hospitals through out the area.
Looking at the location of the proposed super hospital what public transport services will cover all the areas that fall within their medical area?
If there is an outbreak of the infections that some hospitals have experienced and had to shut wards and some hospitals shut to all visitors what happens to the super hospital.
Spend the money needed on upgrading and improving the hospitals we have now that patients and visitors can get to.
There is already one super hospital in the area isn’t that enough the new QE.
Use the money were it is practical.
