Inspectors catch region’s 4,200 TV licence dodgers
Saturday 23rd July 2011, 7:00PM BST.
A total of 4,200 licence dodgers in the Black Country have been caught watching TV illegally since the start of the year, offical figures revealed today.
The licence dodgers were nabbed across the region between January and June, a report from the TV Licensing body revealed.
People caught using a TV without a licence face fines of up to £1,000.
Sandwell was the worst area in the region for people not paying their TV licence, with 1,600 people caught.
In Wolverhampton, 1,100 people were caught out.
Meanwhile, 870 people were fined in Walsall and 660 in Dudley.
Regional spokesman for the West Midlands, Mark Whitehouse, said the organision took a firm stance against fee dodgers.
“To be fair to those who pay, we have to be firm with those who try to get away without paying. We take TV licence evasion very seriously and we will not hesitate to prosecute if people continue to break the law,” he said.

Are these the same fines that have been sent to my bro in law? 30 years at the same address (in a house that has a licence may I add) and gets a £240 fine for a property 16 miles away from where he lives? Never lived there or even in that town. He rang the TV licensing and got told he had to pay the fine in 10 days or legal proceedings would happen, contest it within 10 days but they would not look at the case within the 10 days. Sort it out TV licensing and get your act in order before you start fining more innocent people.

Phil, I really would recommend legal advice. Also let the court see their their somewhat threatening demands..see how far they stand, and how much compensation they are prepared to give you for your suffering. It sounds like they are breaking the law by attempting to fine someone not listed at that address, so just inform them via recorded delivery – see you in court.

To be fair to those who pay? What’s fair about forcing them to pay? Take this philosophy across the pond.. try and tell the American’s they should pay, see what response you get. I pay my license on time every time, but I never voted for it including making it a ‘law’. What are we receiving anyway..most of it is just propoganda yet they still have us over a barrel, one way or another. No wonder the Yanks didn’t want our tea – pity they didn’t finish the job and save us from ourselves.

RECENT NEWS HEADLINES!!!!!
“A total of 74 senior managers earned more than £160,000 in 2009-10, the BBC says”
“But those figures do not include packages for executives such as director-general Mark Thompson, who earned a total of £838,000 in 2009-10”
“He admitted the corporation was finding it ‘extremely hard’ to fill senior roles because of the low wages it pays for management jobs” ????????
Low wages, try existing on the minimum wage of £12.000 a year or £4.000 a year if you’re on the dole!!!!!!
A total of 4,200 people were caught by inspectors and issued with £1,000 fines across the region between January and June,
So we have millions of people struggling to manage on the minimum wage being fined a £1.000 for not having a lecence, that’s probably 2 thirds of their fuel bill for the year, so to ensure the snouts in the trough top BBC Executives get their bank accounts topped up, children living in poverty are having to live without heating through the winter.
A recent comment “Mark Whitehouse, TV Licensing spokesman, said: “While the vast majority of people in the UK pay their licence fee, to be fair to those who pay, we have to be firm with those who try to get away without paying”
I think what he really means is that if some of us have to get ripped off by greedy snouts in the trough, top BBC executives, who are being paid telephone number salaries, for serving up a constant rehash of rubbish programs, then everyone should get ripped off.
Strange, Maggie Thatcher sold off everything else, why didn’t she sell off the BBC? Suppose she had to save some cushy jobs for the countries elite!!!!!!
Privatise the BBC and make these clowns work to get their salaries paid for by giving quality programs.

Confiscate their TV’s. No licence, no TV. If everyone household has to have one by law, then until it changes, no contest.

there has to be something in the human rights book which means that having to pay to watch TV is against the law!!!
if voted on I think that 80-90% of people would have it abolished immediately

I don’t believe Sandwell is “the worst area in the region”. It just means that the “catchers” in Sandwell did a more thorough job. I’m confident that the viewers in Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley are far more illegal than the fine residents of Sandwell. (well they look it anyway)

There is no law that requires one to pay their tv licence.
I have had a tv all my life and never had a tv licence.
The only way you can get fined for no tv licence is by inviting the tv man in your home and then signing his report to say you have no tv licence.
Don’t invite him in your home, you don’t have to answer any of his questions, tell him to get off your property asap.
