Phone hacking scandal: John Yates quits

Under fire police chief John Yates this afternoon quit over the phone hacking scandal, less than 24 hours after Met Police commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson resigned.

The Assistant Commissioner was under increasing pressure in the wake of Sir Paul’s resignation.

It came as David Cameron today delayed MPs’ summer holiday by 24 hours, to let Parliament discuss the phone-hacking scandal after Britain’s top police officer resigned.

The PM said the House would sit on Wednesday – a day after the summer recess was due to begin – to discuss developments and he could “answer any questions”.

But, in the wake of Sir Paul Stephenson’s resignation as Met Police commissioner last night, he denied there was any comparison with his own position.

At a news conference in Pretoria, he added: “The situation in the Met is really quite different.”

And he defended his decision to visit South Africa while the crisis raged.
