Sailing has been suspended at a Midland beauty spot due to its boating pool being strangled by blanket weed, it emerged today.

Efforts to manually clear weed from the pool in Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich, have failed. Now regular events and meetings by Sandwell Model Boat Club have been put on hold until the problem can be solved. The sailing club now operates from the Swan Pool in Sandwell Valley.

Officers from Sandwell Council are working with staff from Sandwell Valley Park Farm to tackle the issue.

Mr Morris, a former electrician for Sandwell Homes, said: "Officers have been in contact with the Environment Agency to see what they can do.They are looking at putting barley straw into the water which would tackle the problem."

It is hoped chemicals released will act as a natural herbicide, killing the weed.
