This was the scene in Wolverhampton this afternoon after a car being chased by police was involved in a head-on smash.

Two men had to be cut from a silver Ford Fiesta after the crash with a black Skoda in Kempthorne Avenue, Bushbury at 11.50am.

The Skoda was being pursued by officers at the time after it failed to stop in the Merry Hill area just minutes earlier.

Police spokesman Lee Page said two men in the Skoda had been arrested. The pair in the Fiesta were taken to New Cross Hospital although their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Officers closed the road from its junction with Hammond Avenue and Low Hill Crescent.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said: "I was doing the washing up at the time and just heard a massive bang.

"When I came out I could see a huge mess. The police were already here and the police helicopter was up in the sky as well.

"We have seen some people being taken to hospital and we just hope that they are not badly hurt."

Fire crews from Fallings Park were making the scene safe this afternoon.
