Accident victim Tom Grove defies doctors

Teenager Tom Grove has defied doctors’ predictions by triumphing at his school’s sports day – less than a year after he suffered two badly broken legs in a crash with a car as he cycled home.

Keen footballer, cyclist and athlete Tom, aged 13, broke both his thighs, a kneecap and two ribs.

The bike was in a head-on crash with a car in Dudley Wood Road, Netherton, as he cycled back from a canoe trip last August.

Doctors warned it would be at least a year before he could play sport again – but he started back on the football pitch at Easter and has now won the 1,500 metre race at the annual sports day of Stourbridge’s Pedmore Technology College and Community School.

“I’ve made a good recovery and built up my muscles and now I’m really proud of my achievement,” said Tom, of West Street, Quarry Bank, who lived in Lantern Road, Dudley Wood, when his accident happened.
