Historic cottage is pulled down
Thursday 23rd June 2011, 11:30AM BST.
It is one of Wolverhampton’s oldest cottages and was once considered a charming historic landmark that should be protected for future generations.
But after years of neglect and falling into a state of disrepair, 93 Goldthorn Hill has now been consigned to the past.
A digger finally moved in to tear down the grade II-building yesterday after years blighting the landscape. Passers-by stopped to watch the building, believed to be more than 100 years old, being torn down.
It comes after the owner of the cottage was served with a demolition notice by Wolverhampton City Council, threatening him with court action and a fine if the cottage was not demolished by June 29.
Police have also been called to the site numerous times amid reports squatters had moved inside.
A campaign was launched years ago to get the cottage put on a special protection list to get it restored and preserved, but it failed, and permission was granted to knock it down.
Two planning applications to transform the site into housing have also been thrown out by the council in the past.
